Police-certificate rules depend on age, country history, length of stay and the immigration program. Starting early matters because some authorities take weeks or months and some issue a certificate only after IRCC provides a request letter.

Map every qualifying stay

For Express Entry, the system generally asks the applicant and family members aged 18 or older for certificates from countries where they stayed for six months in a row or longer during the previous 10 years. Time before age 18 and time in Canada are treated differently. An officer can still request additional certificates.

Apply through the correct authority

Use IRCC's country-specific instructions because the issuing authority, application method, fingerprints, fees and request-letter process vary. A certificate obtained from the wrong level of police or through an unauthorized service may not satisfy the requirement.

Check issue dates and scan quality

For the current country of residence, an Express Entry certificate generally must be issued no more than six months before application. For a former country, it should normally be issued after the last qualifying stay. Upload a clear colour scan of the original and include compliant translation material when it is not in English or French.

Document a genuine delay

If a required certificate cannot arrive before the application deadline, upload a letter of explanation plus evidence of best efforts, such as receipts, correspondence and tracking records, in the correct checklist field. Acceptance is discretionary, so begin the process as early as the program permits.
