Confirm whether the application requires biometrics
Unless exempt, many temporary-residence and permanent-residence applicants must provide biometrics. Canadian citizens, citizenship applicants and most existing permanent residents are exempt, as are children under 14 and applicants over 79, with a different rule for asylum claimants.
Pay and wait for the instruction letter
Applicants normally pay the biometrics fee with the application and wait for a biometrics instruction letter before booking. The letter identifies the deadline and documents to bring. Do not attend a collection location without the required letter unless the official process for the application specifically says otherwise.
Use an authorized collection location
Biometrics are collected at designated Service Canada locations, visa application centres and certain other authorized sites. Availability and appointment rules depend on the country. Bring the instruction letter and valid travel document used in the application.
Understand reuse and PR rules
Temporary-residence biometrics may be reusable in some circumstances. Permanent-residence applicants are generally required to give biometrics for each PR application, subject to specific exceptions. Use IRCC's status checker rather than assuming an older collection remains valid.
