Both routes can support a family visit, but they are not interchangeable. A Super Visa has additional host income, insurance and medical requirements and is designed for longer stays by eligible parents and grandparents.
Who the Super Visa is for
The applicant must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian, and apply from outside Canada. The host must meet current eligibility and minimum necessary income requirements and provide a signed invitation.
Insurance and medical requirements
The applicant must show qualifying private health insurance valid for at least one year from entry and complete an immigration medical exam. Confirm the current rules for approved insurers, coverage and proof before purchasing a policy.
Regular visitor visa
A regular visitor visa may be appropriate for shorter visits or where Super Visa requirements are not met. The officer still assesses purpose of travel, finances, family and economic ties, travel history and whether the person is likely to leave at the end of the authorized stay.
Choose based on the real plan
Explain the proposed dates, accommodation, expenses and family purpose consistently. A longer requested stay requires a realistic financial and medical-insurance plan. Neither visa guarantees entry; the border officer makes the final admission decision.
