Citizenship eligibility is more than holding a PR card. Adult applicants should confirm permanent resident status, physical presence, tax filing where required, language and knowledge requirements, and any prohibition before signing the application.

Physical presence

Most adult applicants need at least 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada during the five years before signing. The period must include at least 730 days as a permanent resident. Some pre-PR time as a temporary resident or protected person may count at one-half day, subject to limits.

Taxes, language and the test

Applicants may need to have filed Canadian income taxes for at least three years in the eligibility period. Adults aged 18 to 54 generally need language proof at CLB or NCLC 4 for speaking and listening and must meet the citizenship knowledge requirement.

Travel history and supporting records

Use the official physical-presence calculator and compare it with passports, entry records, work, school and travel documents. Applying with a buffer above the minimum helps reduce the risk that an overlooked absence drops the total below 1,095 days.

Status and prohibitions

An expired PR card does not prevent a citizenship application if permanent resident status remains valid. Criminal, removal, security, misrepresentation or prior citizenship issues may delay processing or make a person ineligible, so review them before applying.
