A sponsorship application must establish both the sponsor’s eligibility and the genuineness of the relationship. A well-organized record explains the relationship clearly without relying on volume alone.
Start with sponsor eligibility
IRCC states that a sponsor must generally be at least 18 and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person registered in Canada under the Indian Act. A permanent resident living outside Canada cannot sponsor. A Canadian citizen outside Canada must show an intention to live in Canada when the sponsored family member becomes a permanent resident.
Certain circumstances can prevent sponsorship, including some unresolved prior undertakings, receipt of social assistance other than for disability, an undischarged bankruptcy, specified convictions, detention or some unpaid obligations. The current IRCC eligibility page should be checked for the complete list.
Identify the correct relationship category
Spouse, common-law partner and conjugal partner are distinct legal categories. A common-law claim generally requires evidence of at least 12 consecutive months of cohabitation. The documents should match the category selected and explain any periods apart.

Quality, context and consistency matter
A smaller set of representative records can be stronger than hundreds of unexplained screenshots. Label evidence, translate documents as required, protect irrelevant private information and explain unusual facts directly. Review every date across forms, travel history, addresses and relationship evidence.
Is there an income requirement?
IRCC says there is usually no income requirement to sponsor a spouse, partner or dependent child, with limited exceptions involving dependent children who have dependent children of their own. Sponsors still sign an undertaking and must understand the financial responsibility.
